Links - Women in Computing

No time for a complete post of my own so here’s what I’ve been reading and chewing on about women in computing:

  • The Boston Globe looks at the gender gap in computer science.
  • Shelley Powers calls for more disagreement and debate about women’s visibility and participation in tech work. She announced that the SxSW Women and Visibility panel had been cancelled and called for tech women of note to get themselves into Wikipedia.
  • See Jane Compute discusses how computer science touches so many other fields and our current idealization of super-technical geeks deprives the field of students with the highest potential.
  • Flashes of Panic tells us why we should care about closing the gender gap in CS. [Via See Jane Compute.]
  • Riffing off Flashes of Panic’s post, Zuska points out how Carnegie Mellon went in five years from 8% women to 42% women.
  • Geeky Mom talks about how gender-stereotyped toys might keep girls out of CS and what she’s doing about it as a mother of a girl. Thanks to Geeky Mom for leading me to See Jane Compute and Thus Spake Zuska post’s above.
  • Dori Smith finds herself writing a deja vu post where she notes an upcoming conference where only men have been invited to speak.
